Another advancement in realm of electric vehicles will be seen in Tennessee this summer at two of Nissan’s major U.S. facilities. The Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant and Nissan’s headquarters for the Americas will become home to 30 solar-assisted electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, designed to charge the all-electric Nissan LEAF.

Although these charging stations will be on Nissan company property and for use by their employees and visitors, it’s plain to see that charging stations are on the way and we’ll be seeing them in more public places in the years to come. One of the knocks on EVs is that they could leave you stranded - or, how will you get home from work if you use up all the juice getting there? If people are able to charge their EV at work, then that will take car of that problem. Sure, we probably won’t see charging stations at everyone’s job right away but it’s great to see Nissan putting its technology to use for its employees and visitors. If anything, it provides a model for the future.

By next year, Nissan plans to build the LEAF and its lithium-ion batteries at the Smyrna plant. Here’s what the the stations will look like when completed:
