Is America ready for electric cars?

With the Americans becoming more eco-friendly, have concerns about sustainable resources and carbon emissions from cars much to switch to a car powered by alternative energy. While hybrids are all the rage, what about electric cars?

A recent article from MSN interviewed ordinary people across the country about their feelings for electric vehicles. The results were surprising. MSN found that despite the American willingness to pay a little extra for a hybrid vehicle, most aware of the environment were not interested in purchasing an electric vehicle.

Can people surveyed were skeptical of the safety and the actual cost v. benefits of owning an electric car. The key to convincing them to switch, according to most surveyed, costs and a seamless transition. Many people are not willing to give up their high-performance cars in exchange for a car that, while more energy-efficient, less powerful and aesthetic.

Interestingly, automakers go quickly to embrace electric car technology. This year, GM exhibited their Chevy Volt, a fully electric car projected to get an estimated 230 mpg. Nissan and Toyota have both plans to unveil an electric vehicle in 2012, stresses that the key will be affordability.
